What the garage door opener actually does is replace the person who would be doing the opening and closing. The ½ hp automatic opener is designed to lift 10 or 15 pounds. The spring system takes care of the weight of the door. If the garage door has the correct spring system the door will have neutral weight. A ½ hp opener with 10 to 15 pounds of force is sufficient for most standard garage doors, and will give many years of service. On custom 2 car wood garage doors, because of their much higher weight, we recommend moving up to a ¾ hp opener. This opener is designed to lift 20 to 25 pounds. The tension on the springs will weaken over time. When this happens, this opener will still be within the safe lifting range for trouble free operation.
