Chain Drive Opener

The Chain Drive Opener is the most common type that we see in the residential marketplace today. This type garage door opener uses a metal chain and sprocket system to open and close the garage door. The chain drive is the noisiest opener of the three basic types. The basic types are the Belt Drive, Screw Drive and the Chain Drive we are describing here. If you have a detached garage, the noise of the opener may not be an issue in your choice. If you have a home that has an attached garage and your bedroom is above the garage, the noise could be a serious consideration If you have an attached garage with your bedroom above, and have teenage drivers in the family, you may want the noise of the garage door opening alerting you to the time your son or daughter comes home at night.

The three basic types of openers will all work well for you. In order to determine the best fit for you, I will list the advantages and the disadvantages of the chain drive opener.

Advantages
• The chain drive opener is the least expensive of the three basic types

• Two of the Chain Drive Liftmaster openers that we recommend have a dual sprocket system. For a very heavy door, you have the ability to set the opener sprocket for low gear operation. To safely lift it.

Disadvantages
• The chain drive opener is the noisiest one of the three basic types.

• The chain drive needs some maintenance. The chain should be greased at least once a year.

• After several years of use the slack of the chain may have to be adjusted.
